Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
So how do you proceed, Sinbad? Does it appear to be finished this year?

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
Slowly.
I dunno how long it's going to take to texture, but UVing is just the most tedious, time consuming job ever.
Luckily I've nearly UVed everything and I guess it wont matter too much if some of the blocks and beams etc. have visible texture seams...
- To those who don't know, UVing is the process of flattening out a 3d object into 2d space so that 2d images (a.k.a textures) can be applied.
- any 3d object that gets UVed is going to end up having a texture seam.
- Usually you try to hide these as best you can, but its time consuming as hell.
Next time I think I'll try UVing each piece AS I construct it, so as not to lull myself into a false sense of almost-finished-ness.
I would give an estimate of how long its going to take till completion, but we all know how far off my last estimate was..
I will keep working on it however, whenever I can find the spare time to do so.
Cheers,
- Sinbad

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
I think I understand. The UV unwrapping was also my least favourite part of CG although I was using Cinema4D which is software with probably the best UV editor

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
The problem is it's just really repetitive. I have to do the same thing over and over for every single part of my temple.
If I had UVed before duplicating objects it would have saved so much time down the track but I was just in a hurry to get the model finished.
Anyway, I'm gonna keep chipping away at it and hopefully by the end of this week I'll be able to start texturing..
Kinda looking forward to putting some nice textures on it.

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
OK but it is not absolutely neccesary to make textures I would prefer better UV map without texures than average quality UV with textures and also quality is prior to time it takes

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
The UVs I've done so far are pretty good.
I've been making sure all the texture seams will be hidden, and that the texture placement won't be too distorted.
Good to know that quality is top priority in this case.
My last workplace had the opposite philosophy and it drove me nuts...

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
Wow ok, so I've finally finished UVing the damn thing! woohooo!!
So now it's on to texturing which should be a lot more fun whilst also at the same time being a lot less tedious.
Wish me luck,
- Sinbad

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
Mostly, yeah. I've finished the modelling and UVs anyway so if you guys like I could upload the temple as a WIP and just finish the few textures I'm still working on.
Just let meknow how you would like me to upload it and in what format etc. and we should be in business

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
that's good.Upload it to your folder in assets on castlegobs to avoid mess in downloads on google code.If possible upload statues, altar and bowls(or how it is called) as separate models.Use FBX format.I remember it occured sometimes the model was exported together with textures.Try to avoid this case I think it would lead only to problems

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
Alright, so .fbx but with seperate files for seperate geometries
and seperate files for textures (i.e not bundled into the .fbx files)
Got it! Shall do so on Tuesday.

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
Can someone please explain to me how to upload? I've managed to get into the assets folder and can navigate to the models/buildings directory but how do I add to it?

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
I thought you are aware of how to upload at castlegobs. Nevertheless it sounds like you used http protocol. To upload it you need to use FTP. Login and pass are at castlegobs http://www.castlegobs.nl/forums/index.php?showtopic=283. You need to use application like FileZilla to connect.
If it is too complicated for you PM me your gmail address and I will give you permission to upload it to googlecode then I will move it to castlegobs myself.

Re: Sinbad's Model Thread
It appears only few persons on castlegobs knew how to upload via ftp and it was the reason why there were so many tasks done but the results were never uploaded
